This workshop examines the best practices of using rubrics. Participants will walk away with a quality rubric customized to an existing (or hypothetical) assignment in their course. To facilitate the practical component of this workshop, we ask that participants come to the workshop prepared with instructions for one assignment with which they would like to align a rubric.
The day before the workshop, participants receive an email providing instructions on how to access the pre-workshop materials. During the workshop, facilitators will guide participants through the process of building and utilizing rubrics in e-Learning.
The workshop is organized to allow participants to easily navigate to specific skills and concepts. The goal is to ensure participants are comfortable with the workshop’s layout and design, and will reference the content when future questions arise.
Rubrics in e-Learning
Rubrics offer instructors a powerful feedback and communication tool in the online classroom. In this workshop, participants will view sample rubrics and identify the key components of a rubric in e-Learning.
Grading with Rubrics
Rubrics provide feedback on an array of student products while coaching for improvement, and not focusing on errors. Using SpeedGrader, workshop facilitators model the advantages of, and speed in which, rubrics can assist with grading in e-Learning.
Creating Rubrics in e-Learning
Rubrics clearly outline the essential components of an assignment and show students how they are being assessed. After modeling the uses of rubrics in e-Learning, facilitators will guide participants through the mechanics of creating an effective rubric that focuses on the most important aspects of an assignment.
Rubrics are useful for a variety of assignment types including concept maps, literature reviews, reflective writings, bibliographies, oral presentations, critical thinking, citation analyses, portfolios, projects and oral and written communication skills. Using the “Additional Resources and Supporting Research,” participants can delve further into rubrics and the ways in which they can be used in their courses.
