Overview

The Principles of Effective Instruction certificate of completion provides participants the option to choose their own educational experience by completing five focused professional development opportunities. This series will address components of instructional concepts including pedagogical theory, course design, student engagement, and the role of assessments in online learning.

Structure

This certificate of completion is a series of eight online workshops; participants are required to complete at least five offerings to receive the certificate. Each workshop is offered over a one-week period and participants can complete assignments at their own pace. It is anticipated that each workshop takes approximately 1-2 hours to complete with an emphasis on building content and assessments that can be utilized in your courses.

Academic Integrity

Academic Integrity provides participants the opportunity to discover what constitutes plagiarism and understand how students intentionally and unintentionally violate university honor code. Participants will be equipped with strategies to effectively design a course that cultivates a culture of academic integrity.

Aligning Assessments to Objectives

Aligning Assessments to Objectives provides participants the opportunity to analyze the relationship between course goals, student learning objectives, and assessments. Participants will focus on creating a course architecture for one module of content that promotes a student-centered approach to course design.

Applying Educational Theory

Applying Educational Theory analyzes how the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education and the Experiential Learning cycle can influence instruction and course design. Participants will create an assignment that applies basic concepts from one of these theories, while reflecting on the potential benefits and challenges of doing so.

Effective Feedback

Effective Feedback allows participants to analyze the positive impact of utilizing informative evaluations on student work in order to improve performance. Participants will be introduced to strategies that can be implemented in the course design process to provide effective feedback for all class sizes.

Ensuring Usability in Online Courses provides participants the opportunity to analyze instructional design strategies that will impact the learner’s experience. Participants will focus on improving usability of a module in a course, and reflect on ways to provide clear direction to students.

Instructional Media

Instructional Media focuses on the creation of effective online lectures using technology. Participants will analyze the benefits of using engaging online lectures in their instruction, as well as the best practices for producing quality videos.

Recognize and Respond to At-Risk Students provides participants the opportunity to understand the basic principles of recognizing academically at-risk students and apply appropriate intervention strategies in eLearning. Participants will adapt their feedback to specific challenges and risk factors that students face in higher education.
