My colleague Chris Sharp and I went back to the Tech Kitchen last week to share more of our AI Prompt Cookbook: Elevated AI Recipes to Encourage Authentic Assessment (in true cooking blog fashion, scroll to the bottom of this post to find the recipes!). We paired authentic assessments with generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) to help address some of the issues they present on their own: 

Challenges

• Use of generative AI can lead to concerns around academic integrity. 
• Authentic assessment requires significant time and resources for preparation and facilitation that are not always available. 

When we pair artificial intelligence with authentic assessment, we’re able to address both of these concerns: 

Solutions

• Authentic assessment, a type of assessment that emphasizes applying concepts to real-world scenarios (e.g., case studies, role playing, experiential learning), can help address academic integrity concerns by making learning more meaningful to students and more personalized by asking them to reflect and consider their own personal background and approach. 
• Generative AI gives us tools to create and facilitate authentic assessments in a more efficient way. For instance, role playing can be challenging to facilitate because students will need to be prepared for multiple roles and class time will need to be devoted to engaging in these scenarios. When the time and resources aren’t available to facilitate this, generative AI can assist by allowing students to engage in role playing prompts individually, followed by a larger class discussion. 

Generative AI also allows instructors to create authentic materials from multiple perspectives, like case studies and examples. This is a great way to increase representation in your course materials.
